Richard M. Cohen is the author of the New York Times Bestsellers Blindsided: Lifting a Life above Illness and Strong at the Broken Places. Cohen hosts a radio broadcast by the same name on WABC Radio, examining coping issues frequently associated with chronic illnesses. He has been a contributor to the New York Times Health page. These accomplishments follow a twenty-five year career as a network television news producer. Cohen has won numerous awards in journalism, including three Emmys and a John Foster Peabody.

The subject of this podcast is “Understanding Your Genetic History.” Our speaker, Shelly Cummings, is a genetic counselor and regional medical specialist with Myriad Genetic Laboratories. Prior to this position, Ms. Cummings was a genetic counselor at the University of Chicago for 13 years. Ms. Cummings is a speaker at local, regional, and national level for both professional and lay audiences on a range of topics, including genetics, hereditary cancer syndromes, genetic testing for cancer predisposition genes, and the psychological aspects of cancer predisposition. Shelly has authored several original articles on cancer genetics in journals, and she is a writer and editor for the National Society of Genetic Counselors’ national newsletter. She’s also written five college genetic and biology textbooks for undergraduates.

The subject of this podcast is, “Dealing with the Side Effects of Treatment Now and Later” and features speaker Dr. Banu Arun. Dr. Arun is Associate Professor at the Department of Breast Medical Oncology and Clinical Cancer Prevention at MD Anderson Cancer Center at the University of Texas. She is Co-Medical Director of Clinical Cancer Genetics and Director of High Risk Breast Clinic. Dr. Arun earned her Fellowship in hematology and oncology at the Lombardi Cancer Center at Georgetown University in Washington DC. Her clinical research involved identification of targeted therapies for breast cancer treatment and breast cancer prevention. She’s the principle investigator of several medical, clinical trials evaluating agents in metastatic breast cancer.

Kyle will address being young and single when first diagnosed and later the issues of a pregnancy and second breast cancer. Dorothy will discuss the African-American experience and her community’s perspective of the disease. Polly had a strong family history and made a personal decision for prophylactic surgery. Jim, last but absolutely not least, is a male breast cancer survivor with the unique experience of his wife also being diagnosed with breast cancer before his diagnosis.
